Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

Weekly on North Korea (99. 6. 21 - 6. 27)

North Korean leader Kim Jong-il visited farm communes in Anbyun, Kangwon Province, with Deputy Chairman of the Defense Committee Yi Yong-mu, Generals Hyun Chul-hae and Park Jae-kyung, and First Directors of the KWP Central Committee Yi Yong-chul and Chang Sung-taek last week, and urged farmers to "cultivate bumper crops."

North Korea's Korea Central Broadcasting televised a rare "revenge rally" by farm workers in the city of Nampo on the forty-ninth anniversary of the beginning of the Korean War on June 25th. An editorial in the Worker's Daily called for a "heightened stance of vigilance and mobilization-preparedness" to augment internal political cohesion in the wake of naval skirmishes in the West Sea.

North Korean delegates to the Inter-Korean Deputy Ministerial-level Talks in Beijing attempted to delay the proceedings with charges of South Korean aggression and provocation, which were wholly irrelevant to the issues at hand.

Announcing the North's decision to release South Korean tourist Min Young-mi, a North Korean spokesman for the Committee for the Peaceful Unification of the Fatherland blasted the South Koreans for "fabricating the entire incident" and demanded that the ROK "put an end to its attempts to abuse the tours to Mt. Kumgang for purposes of anti-North machinations."
