Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

Weekly on North Korea (99. 5. 31 - 6. 6)

Kim Jong-il's tour of his military units continued this week, as he attended a fire-support maneuver by KPA Unit 833. A North Korean delegation led by Speaker of the North Korean Supreme People's Assembly Kim Young-nam was in China this week for a meeting with Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Prime Minister Zhu Rongji. The Chinese leadership made a promise to provide North Korea with 150000 tons of food and 400000 tons of coke this year free of charge.

The decision by the International Court of Justice to indict five high-ranking members of the Yugoslav government for war crimes was derided by the North Korean foreign ministry as "a scheme" with the US pulling the strings. North Korea's anti-ROK propaganda machine, the People's Democratic Front, claimed that military cooperation between South Korea and Japan went "beyond simple cooperation and is traveling down a dangerous road to military alliance."

Reports from North Korea's Central Broadcasting said, "The traitor Kim Young-sam was surprised by a paint attack at Kimpo" to describe the recent paintballing of Kim Young-sam. The Pyongyang Broadcasting System made an issue of the current expensive attire incident, citing it as "evidence that reveals the ruling upper class of the South for what they are, a clique rotten and corrupt." Also, "Southern attempts to shake us with the supposed policy of tolerance will never work," said an article in the official organ, Worker's Daily, just as deputy minister-level talks between South and North Korea were about to begin.
