DAILY PRESS BRIEFING
DPB #69
MONDAY, MY 24, 1999, 12:45 P.M.
(ON THE RECORD UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED)
............
QUESTION: Has the US team left Kumchang-re yet and if so, have you heard anything from them on what they found there?MR. RUBIN: With respect to the team in Kumchang-ni, we call it, the US team concluded its work. They received good cooperation from North Korean officials. After the team's arrival back in the US, they will report to senior officials for a complete review of their work which will likely take some time. Only after that review will I be able to answer questions on the results of the visit.
QUESTION: But did they leave yet?
MR. RUBIN: They have concluded their work. They have left and they received good cooperation from North Korean officials. Once they return to the United States and have been able to share the results, we'll be able to, at some point thereafter, give you information.
QUESTION: On North Korea, I'd like to ask two questions. First is, last Friday you mentioned that Dr. Perry's meeting with Kim Jong-il is desirable - is he going to see him or is -
MR. RUBIN: I have no new information on his schedule with respect to that question, but it remains our view that it would be desirable.
QUESTION: If not, what level of officials is he going to meet?
MR. RUBIN: He's got a high level of officials he will be meeting. I think that schedule - we can try to get for you during the course of the day - as much of it as possible, but it involves very senior North Korean officials. We are, of course, aware of the nature of that regime and that's why we thought it would be desirable to see Kim Jong-il.
QUESTION: There were reports that Dr. Perry is carrying President Clinton's message. Is that true?
MR. RUBIN: It would appropriate for a presidential envoy to carry a message from the President, yes.
............
QUESTION: One more on North Korea. Perry had met - what was it, this morning in Japan with officials? Can you give us -- tell us anything?
MR. RUBIN: I think they put out a joint statement, and I wouldn't be able to go beyond that. But I'll get you a copy of it.
