The second-day session of U.S.- North Korea missile talks is underway in the North Korean interests mission in Berlin. Following yesterday's meeting, the two sides today are discussing suspension of the development and export of North Korea's missiles and the issue of economic compensation for this. However, it has been learned that they failed to narrow differences a great deal.Correspondent Yi Myong-ku reports from Berlin.
[Begin recording] [Yi Myong-ku] The second-day session of U.S.- North Korea missile talks began in the North Korean interests mission. The number of delegates of the U.S. side, which was five yesterday, has increased to 10 today, thus showing at least some progress in their discussions.
Robert Einhorn, senior U.S. delegate, seems to have continually demanded the suspension of Scud missile exports and abandonment of the development of Taepodong missile Nos. 1 and 2 with ranges of more than 4,000 kilometers. Furthermore, it has been learned that the U.S. side urged North Korea to place its missiles under the Missile Technology Control Regime with a view to making North Korean missiles subject to international surveillance.
To this, the North Korean side insisted that since missiles are self-defensive means, other countries should not interfere in their development and production. Thus, North Korea is demanding considerable economic compensation in return for giving up the exports.
Meanwhile, the delegations of the two sides met each other three times, including at a reception. They declined to mention the details of the talks, but only stressed that the beginning was good.
[North Korean delegate Yi Hyong-chol, in Korean; video shows Yi Hyong-chol speaking] I think we made a good start in the talks. We will continue the talks tomorrow.
[Senior U.S. delegate Einhorn, in English with Korean subtitles at bottom of screen; video shows Einhorn speaking] We made a good start today. We are going to meet again tomorrow.
[Yi Myong-ku] The current talks were the first meeting between the delegations of the United States and North Korea since we proposed four-way talks. Thus, it is highly likely that they touched on the four-way talks in some form. The United States and North Korea will finalize the first round of missile talks today for the moment. Following this, they will hold a second round of talks. [end recording]
