RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY OPPOSES THREATS TO SECURITY OF CYPRUS MOSCOW, JANUARY 11, /FROM RIA NOVOSTI CORRESPONDENT/--
Russia cannot ignore the statements by Turkey's foreign minister Tansu Ciller to the effect that the placement of the Russian-made S-300PMU-1 air defense missile systems would trigger most decisive counter measures, up to a military action, reads the statement by Russian foreign ministry spokesman Gennady Tarasov that RIA Novosti has at its disposal.
The document points out that Russia, which is interested in a settlement of the Cypriot controversy and is a member of the UN Security Council, cannot overlook statements by the Turkish side which contain a direct threat to the security of Cyprus. "The fanning of artificial tensions around the purely defensive missile systems does not promote stability or an atmosphere of trust and cooperation in the region," Russian foreign ministry spokesman Gennady Tarasov stressed.
The foreign ministry spokesman also noted that Russia has been and is an active advocate and conductor of the idea of full demilitarisation of Cyprus. The proposal, when implemented, could help remove all differences. Moscow hopes that the Turkish side would better heed the idea instead of making rash statements which have evoked a clearly negative reaction throughout the world.
