Cuba blasts report on human rights violations in the country

RIA Novosti

05:23 20/11/2009 HAVANA, November 20 (RIA Novosti) - Cuba has sharply criticized a recent report on human rights violations in the country prepared by the Human Rights Watch (HRW) organization.

The HRW said in a 123-page report, "New Castro, Same Cuba," published on Wednesday, that rather than dismantle Cuba's repressive machinery, Raul Castro, who took over the reigns of power from his brother, Fidel Castro, "has kept it firmly in place and fully active."

"They [the HRW] do not have imagination. We have seen the same scenario attempting to justify the failed U.S. policy on imposing a blockade on Cuba over and over for the last 50 years," the Granma newspaper said on Thursday.

The paper said the HRW unfairly accused the Cuban authorities of everyday forms of repression, which "create a climate of fear that has a profound chilling effect on the exercise of fundamental freedoms in Cuban society."

At the same time, the HRW failed to mention that Cuba submitted to the UN Human Rights Council in February a new report on human rights activities in the country and "received an overwhelming support of its social policies," the paper said.

"The worst blind is the one who does not want to see," the Granma said adding that the HRW report was a clear attempt to support the weakening internal counter-revolutionary forces financed by the anti-Cuban lobby in the U.S. government.
