On the morning of November 25, 2025, President Xi Jinping met at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing with King Tupou VI of Tonga, who is on a state visit to China.
President Xi Jinping noted that China and Tonga are true friends who have stood together through thick and thin, and the two countries enjoy a time-honored friendship. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the two sides have always respected each other, treated each other as equals, and firmly supported each other on issues involving their respective core interests and major concerns. Practical cooperation has yielded fruitful results, and the comprehensive strategic partnership has continued to deepen. Together, the two countries have set a fine example of friendship and cooperation between countries different in social system and size. No matter how the international landscape evolves, China will always be a good partner that Tonga can trust, and always support Tonga in upholding independence and sovereignty. China will work with Tonga to forge greater synergy between their development strategies, expand cooperation in such areas as trade and investment, agriculture and fisheries, infrastructure, clean energy, medical and health care, tourism, and climate response; increase exchanges in such areas as education, sports, youth and media and at subnational levels; and continue to support Tonga's economic and social development under the framework of South-South cooperation. China welcomes visits by Tongans from various sectors of society to exchange experience in governance and development and gain a fuller understanding of China.
President Xi Jinping underscored that the fourth plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China set out a top-level, strategic design for China's economic and social development in the next five years. China will pursue high-quality development as the main focus, further deepen reform comprehensively, expand high-standard opening up, and share development opportunities with all other countries. China has put forward the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, the Global Civilization Initiative, and the Global Governance Initiative, with a view to encouraging all countries to work together for development and share peace together. China is ready to work with Tonga to implement the four major Global Initiatives, so as to create a better life for the people of both countries, foster a China-Pacific Island Countries community with a shared future, and contribute to the building of a community with a shared future for humanity.
King Tupou VI said that the Tonga-China comprehensive strategic partnership has made significant progress, and expressed appreciation for China's long-standing, selfless assistance for Tonga's economic and social development. Tonga highly values its relations with China, firmly upholds the one-China principle, resolutely opposes any form of "Taiwan independence," and steadfastly supports the Chinese government in realizing national reunification. Tonga hopes to expand cooperation with China in areas including economy and trade, agriculture, clean energy, education, health care, environmental protection, and strive for more tangible outcomes in bilateral relations. Tonga congratulates China on its great achievements under the leadership of President Xi, and hopes to learn from the CPC's success in state governance. Tonga supports the four major Global Initiatives proposed by President Xi, and will enhance communication and collaboration with China to jointly address global challenges such as climate change.
During the visit, the two sides released the Joint Statement Between the People's Republic of China and the Kingdom of Tonga.
After the meeting, the two heads of state jointly witnessed the signing of cooperation documents in economy and trade, medical care, education, and development among others.
Prior to the meeting, President Xi Jinping and his wife, Madame Peng Liyuan, held a welcoming ceremony for King Tupou VI and Queen Nanasipau'u at the Northern Hall of the Great Hall of the People.
A 21-gun salute was fired in Tiananmen Square, and a guard of honor lined up in salutation. Accompanied by President Xi, King Tupou VI reviewed the guard of honor of the People's Liberation Army and watched the march-past.
