A Chinese private aerospace company on Tuesday unveiled the YKJ-1000 hypersonic missile capable of automatic target identification and evasive maneuvers.
With China having displayed several types of hypersonic weapons at the V-Day military parade on September 3, an expert said that China has strong scientific capabilities in the hypersonic field, providing foundation for diversified hypersonic projects.
Beijing-based company Lingkong Tianxing Technology released a video on its WeChat account introducing the YKJ-1000 hypersonic missile on Tuesday.
According to the company's introduction in the video, the missile has an operational range between 500 to 1,300 kilometers, a speed between Mach 5 to 7, and a powered cruise time of 360 seconds.
The video clip showed that the missile can be carried by a launcher vehicle. After launch, the missile can automatically identify targets and automatically make evasive maneuvers against potential interceptions before the final attack.
Meanwhile, the video clips say the YKJ-1000 is a boost-glide missile, with its glider equipped with an additional rocket engine.
It also showed a test launch of the missile, which accurately hit its target.
The basic version of the YKJ-1000 has successfully achieved mass production, while an intelligent version of the YKJ-1000, integrated with AI decision-making and swarm collaboration capabilities, is now in full-scale development, the company told the Global Times in a statement on Tuesday.
The missile can conduct rapid precision strike against high value targets behind defense lines, such as command centers, missile positions and radar installations, or it can also complete fast reconnaissance taking advantage of its speed and high-resolution sensors, according to the statement.
Wang Ya'nan, chief editor of Beijing-based Aerospace Knowledge magazine, told the Global Times on Tuesday that the performance of the YKJ-1000 hypersonic missile displayed in the developer's video looks very impressive.
It makes sense for private aerospace companies to explore hypersonic flights, since aerospace equipment and hypersonic equipment share similar technologies. If such explorations are realized, I believe Chinese private companies relied on state-owned scientific research infrastructures and facilities that the country has been building for decades, Wang said.
At the V-Day military parade in Beijing on September 3, China displayed multiple types of hypersonic missiles, such as the YJ-19, YJ-17, YJ-20 anti-ship missiles, as well as the YJ-21, DF-17, DF-26D hypersonic missiles.
According to a report by chinanews.com in October, Lingkong Tianxing focuses on the research and development as well as commercial application of hypersonic flight technology. It possesses a full-system covering overall design capability for hypersonic vehicles, boasts a professional rocket assembly team, and is capable of independently completing the entire process from assembly, testing to launch implementation.
The company has partnerships with several state-owned aerospace and aviation companies as well as scientific institutes and universities, according to its website.
The company claims that its core team has participated in major national hypersonic research projects and possesses full-process research and development experience, from conceptual design and simulation verification to flight testing. Currently, the company has obtained relevant military qualifications and been incorporated into the national research and production system.
