When asked to comment on a statement issued by 10 former leaders of Caribbean Community member states who expressed deep concern over certain countries' military actions in the Caribbean Sea, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Tuesday that China has noted the statement and hopes the US will heed the strong appeals from Caribbean nations and the international community, stop actions that undermine peace and stability in the Caribbean region.
In joint statement, the former leaders reaffirmed the region's status as a zone of peace for half a century, and stressed that the US should combat drug trafficking within the framework of the rule of law rather than giving a green light to extrajudicial killings. Earlier, UN human rights experts and Caribbean media commentators also stated that US military actions amount to extrajudicial execution.
It is also hoped that the US could return to the path of conducting normal law enforcement and judicial cooperation within bilateral and multilateral legal frameworks, said Guo.
