The Chinese Embassy in the US called a US House Republicans' report "groundless," as the report claimed that the Pentagon-funded projects in collaboration with Chinese universities and institutes in defense industry have allowed "China to exploit US research partnerships for military gains," according to AP on Saturday.

A Chinese expert told the Global Times that the report represents a tactic commonly used by some US politicians to smear China, trying to diminish China's technological development capabilities and sever China-US research collaboration, which exposed those politicians' petty, malicious, and narrow-minded mentality.

AP reported on Saturday that the report, released Friday by House Republicans, claimed that over a recent two-year period, the Pentagon funded hundreds of projects done in collaboration with universities in China and institutes linked to that nation's defense industry, including many blacklisted by the US government for working with the Chinese military.

The report claimed that the projects have allowed China to exploit US research partnerships for military gains while the two countries are locked in a tech and arms rivalry, according to AP.

The Pentagon didn't immediately respond to an AP request for comment.

The Chinese Embassy in the US on Friday called the report "groundless." "We oppose it," the embassy said, AP reported.

On December 16, 2024, Lin Jian, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, stated at press conference when commenting on the news that China and the US extended the Agreement Between the United States and China on Cooperation in Science and Technology for years that "scientific cooperation between China and the US benefits both sides."

Regrettable, the latest report by some US politicians would shape a negative atmosphere in normal China-US science and research collaboration in public opinion and hinders normal exchanges between both sides, Lü Xiang, a research fellow at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told the Global Times on Saturday.

In their current state of being overly suspicious and nervous, even ordinary educational collaborations are perceived by some as aiding China's military industry, the expert commented.

The expert believes the report, with groundless accusations, tried to belittle China's defense industrial capabilities, implying that any advancements in China's defense prowess are achieved based on US technology, Lü pointed out.

"This is a very petty, malicious, and narrow-minded report," the expert said. We must recognize that it represents a tactic commonly used by certain US politicians to smear China, the expert warned.
