China's J-20 stealth fighter jet will be statically displayed on the ground for the first time during the upcoming aviation open-day activities of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force in Changchun, Northeast China's Jilin Province, the Chinese Defense Ministry announced on Thursday. With bomber formations also scheduled to conduct flyovers, an expert said that these new features will be the highlights of the event, as the PLA Air Force confidently showcases its capabilities in fulfilling its missions of safeguarding China's skies.

When asked to introduce the PLA Air Force's aviation open-day activities, which is scheduled to be held from September 19 to 23 in Changchun, Senior Colonel Zhang Xiaogang, a spokesperson for China's Ministry of National Defense, said at a regular press conference on Thursday that the event is themed "pursuing dreams in aerospace, winning victories of the future."

The event will comprehensively display over 100 types of PLA Air Force aircraft and ground equipment that are in active service, as well as retired legacy equipment. It will feature the first static display of the J-20 fighter jet, the first-ever flyovers by bomber formations, and spectacular performances by the Bayi, Red Falcon and Sky Wing aerobatic teams, Zhang said.

Fu Qianshao, a Chinese military affairs expert, told the Global Times on Thursday that the first-ever static ground display of the J-20 is expected to be the main highlight of this year's Changchun open-day event.

In previous airshows and PLA Air Force open-day activities, the J-20 only conducted aerial performances and landed briefly in front of the public. But a static display means that the public can now get a chance to observe the details of the Chinese stealth fighter jet up close, Fu said, noting that this reflects the PLA Air Force's openness and confidence with the advanced aircraft.

Flyovers by bombers will also be an exciting spectacle for the visitors, as the bomber formations are expected to fly at low altitudes, giving the public a close-up feel of their strategic capabilities, as the PLA Air Force not only has the means to defend, but also attack, Fu said.

The event will also enhance public interactions with equipment by setting up immersive experience zones such as flight simulators, drone controls and parachute jumping activities. Concurrently, open-day events at military barracks will be organized to provide the public with more intuitive and in-depth understanding of the PLA Air Force, according to Zhang, the defense ministry spokesperson.

It will also feature a PLA Air Force-themed exhibition hall, along with dedicated zones for pilot recruitment, air traffic control and ground academy admissions. An aviation culture salon will be set up, alongside a series of activities including the annual drone conference and touring performances by the Air Force military band. Outstanding PLA Air Force pilots will also engage in interactions with various sectors of society, Zhang said.

Fu said that he expects other types of the PLA Air Force's mainstay aircraft, such as the J-16 and J-10C fighter jets, the JL-10 advanced trainer jet and the Z-20 helicopter, to also participate in the event. The aviation open-day activities can fully display the PLA Air Force's recent achievements in weapons and equipment development as well as combat training, the expert said.
