Chinese and Russian warships wrapped up a 15-day joint maritime patrol in the Western Pacific on Wednesday, with experts saying that the voyage boosted the two navies joint operational capabilities and played a positive role in safeguarding peace and stability.
The China-Russia vessel flotilla hosted a departure ceremony in the Western Pacific, marking the successful conclusion of the joint maritime patrol, China National Radio (CNR) reported on Wednesday.
After entering the maritime joint patrol phase on August 6 following the China-Russia Joint Sea-2025 joint exercise, the Type 052D guided missile destroyer Shaoxing and the Type 903 comprehensive replenishment ship Qiandaohu of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy formed a joint task force with the Russian Navy's large anti-submarine ship Admiral Tributs in the Western Pacific. The task force also carried two shipborne helicopters, according to the CNR report.
The Chinese and Russian sides conducted exercises including joint search and rescue, joint replenishment, joint escort, and joint air defense operations, adopting alternating or joint command modes, the report said.
The joint exercise and joint patrol represent another successful implementation of the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, further deepening practical cooperation between the two militaries, CNR reported, citing remarks from the joint command of the events.
Since the commencement of the joint exercise, officers and sailors from both sides demonstrated a high degree of mutual trust and seamless coordination, successfully completing all scheduled drills, engaged in in-depth exchanges at multiple levels, from campaign to tactics, further enhancing their capability to execute joint maritime operations, the joint command said, noting that this demonstrates their resolve and ability to jointly address maritime security threats and safeguard international and regional peace and stability.
Zhang Junshe, a Chinese military affairs expert, told the Global Times that the China-Russia joint maritime patrol demonstrates the two navies' capabilities, a move that is conducive to deterring potential security threats and creating a positive environment for peaceful development of the region.
While the Chinese side has seemingly not revealed the routes the joint naval task force covered, the Russian side announced in the middle of the voyage that the two countries warships had reached Kamchatka in Russia for replenishment.
Chinese military affairs expert Fu Qianshao told the Global Times that this means the joint maritime patrol covered a long distance, and such a voyage must have boosted the training level of the Chinese sailors amid the PLA Navy's strides toward deep blue waters.
