In response to a question from an AFP reporter that Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison Holdings Limited said on Monday it is considering inviting a major strategic Chinese investor to join a US-led consortium to jointly discuss the deal on ports in the Panama Canal, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said that China has noted the announcement.

He added that the Chinese government will conduct lawful regulation, firmly safeguard national sovereignty, security and development interests, and uphold justice and fairness in the market.

Hong Kong conglomerate CK Hutchison confirmed on Monday in a filing to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange that it is in discussions to bring a major Chinese strategic investor into port transaction consortium. The company statement said the "period for exclusive negotiations" mentioned in the March announcement had expired, but that discussions will continue.

In the statement, CK Hutchison said that changes to the consortium's composition and transaction structure will be required to secure approvals from all relevant regulatory authorities. The company intends to allow sufficient time for discussions to reach a new arrangement.
