China's Commerce Minister Wang Wentao stated on Friday that facts have proven China-US trade cooperation has solid public foundations, and any artificial "decoupling" is infeasible.
Wang's remarks were made at a press conference to summarize the achievements during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25) in Beijing.
China-US economic and trade relations have weathered storms, yet both sides still remain important economic and trade partners, Wang said.
Wang noted that since 2018, rising US unilateralism and protectionism have led to frequent trade frictions, with a series of actions severely impacting and disrupting normal economic and trade cooperation between China and the US.
Despite a decline in the share of bilateral trade, overall trade has remained stable. In 2024, China-US goods trade and services trade reached $688.3 billion and $155.8 billion, respectively, representing an increase of 18 percent and 34.7 percent compared to 2017.
The fact proves that China-US economic and trade cooperation is built on a solid economic and public foundation, and artificial "decoupling" is infeasible, Wang added.
There are four sentences to summarize China-US economic and trade relations during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, Wang said.
China-US economic and trade relations have experienced both ups and downs, yet the two sides continue to be important economic and trade partners. The relationship is, at its core, mutually beneficial; cooperation represents the only correct path forward. While differences and frictions are inevitable in bilateral economic and trade cooperation, dialogue and consultation remain the best means to resolve them, Wang said.
Wang emphasized that China's position has been consistent: the country firmly defends its national interests as well as international fairness and justice.
