Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Wednesday that "the G7 Summit once again manipulated issues related to China. The G7 made irresponsible remarks on Taiwan, the South China Sea, and the East China Sea, falsely accused China of 'overcapacity' and 'market distortion.'"
"This constitutes interference in China's internal affairs and violation of the basic norms governing international relations. China firmly opposes this and has lodged strong protests with relevant parties," the spokesperson said.
The so-called G7 summit chair's summary claimed that China should "refrain from market distortions and harmful overcapacity, tackle global challenges and promote international peace and security." The summary also claimed that there are "concerns about China's destabilizing activities in the East and South China Seas and the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits."
The G7 summit came to a close after the group's leaders issued a series of joint statements on key priorities, Canadian media reported. As expected, the leaders did not issue a joint communiqué, according to the media report.
The decision to forgo a joint communiqué this time highlights the difficulty the G7 countries face in reaching a consensus on broad issues of common concern, Li Haidong, a professor at China Foreign Affairs University, told the Global Times on Wednesday. "Specifically, the US has shown reluctance to endorse the traditional format of a collective G7 statement, reflecting growing internal divisions within the group," Li said.
The G7's approach to international economic affairs clearly reflects a bloc-based, alliance-oriented mindset, deeply rooted in Cold War thinking, Li noted. "Rather than adopting a perspective of mutual benefit and global interconnectedness, they view issues through a divisive 'us versus them' lens, politicizing and depoliticizing economic matters," the expert said.
In response to the G7 summit chair's summary, the spokesperson from the Chinese Foreign Ministry said the biggest factor undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is the "Taiwan independence" separatist activities and interference by external forces. " If the G7 truly cares about peace in the Taiwan Strait, it should abide by the one-China principle, categorically oppose "Taiwan independence", and support China's reunification," Guo noted.
"At present, the situation in the East China Sea and the South China Sea is generally stable. The G7 should respect the joint efforts of regional countries to resolve issues through dialogue and consultation and maintain peace and stability, and stop using maritime issues to sow discord between regional countries and escalate regional tensions," the spokesperson said.
The so-called "market distortions" and "overcapacity" accusations are absolutely false. The G7 use them as an excuse for their trade protectionist practices, and to essentially contain and suppress China's industrial progress, and politicize and weaponize economic and trade issues, Guo said.
China once again urges the G7 to see the overwhelming global trend, abandon the Cold War mentality and ideological bias, stop interfering in China's internal affairs, stop instigating conflict and confrontation, and act in the interest of the international community, Guo said.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also used her participation at the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Canada, to warn against a "new China shock," Euronews reported on Tuesday.
However, while von der Leyen directly slammed China in her comments, the G7 as a whole may not be so bold, Politico reported on Tuesday.
In a draft statement to be released from the summit, which Politico has seen, G7 leaders will pledge to implement a "G7 critical minerals action plan." But the draft doesn't name-check China, instead obliquely mentioning "non-market policies and practices in the critical minerals sector."
In response to the European Commission President's criticism toward China at the G7 summit including so-called accusations against China on trade rules, industry subsidies, dominance in rare earths and so-called overcapacity, Guo said on Wednesday that China has noted related reports. "Those remarks disregard facts, riddled with bias and double standards. China expresses strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition," the Foreign Ministry spokesperson said.
On the issue of critical mineral supply chains, the G7 emphasizes on a strategy to help protect the supply of critical minerals and bolster their economies, a move that in reality aims to deliberately bypass China, Li said.
The G7 fails to recognize the importance of mineral supply chains from a globalized perspective. They are attempting to restrict China's development while simultaneously demanding that China meets their own needs, without taking into account China's legitimate interests and rights to development, Li said.
