In response to claims by The Guardian on Sunday that China is considering lifting the 2021 sanctions imposed on certain British members of parliament over their lies and disinformation about the so-called human rights issue in Xinjiang, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiankun stated Monday that this matter originated from the UK's unwarranted sanctions against Chinese individuals and entities in the first place, and China's subsequent countermeasures were necessary and justified. The merits and demerits of the case, as well as its entire course, are crystal clear, Guo said.
When asked at a regular press briefing on Monday whether the topic of lifting the sanctions was discussed during last week's China-UK official meeting in London, Guo stated that he was not aware of the specifics of the issue.
"Equality, mutual benefit, and meeting each other halfway form the foundation for growing bilateral relations and the principle for solving any differences," Guo stressed.
The Guardian claimed on Sunday that China is considering lifting the sanctions it imposed on UK parliamentarians in 2021, calling it "the latest sign of warming relations between London and Beijing."
