China has always believed that the development of relations between countries should not be directed against any third party, instead it should be conducive to promoting friendly and cooperative relations among countries, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Thursday.

These remarks were made in response to a media inquiry about some Canadian premiers describing China as a "common economic enemy" during their visit to US, following Trump's announcement to levy additional tariffs on certain Canadian products.

On February 1, Trump signed executive orders to impose 25-percent additional tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10-percent tariff hike on imports from China, drawing widespread opposition and immediate retaliations. He later paused the tariffs on Mexico and Canada for one month to allow negotiations, according to Xinhua.
