China does not take the initiative to provoke trade disputes and is willing to resolve issues through dialogue and consultation; however, China will definitely take necessary measures to resolutely safeguard its own rights and interests in the face of unilateral bullying acts, He Yongqian, a spokesperson for China's Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM), said at a press briefing on Thursday.

He made the remarks in response to a question about whether the MOFCOM has more responses and comments on the US' tariff hikes and whether China and the US had any communication over the past week on tariff-related matters.

In responding to a separate question about US President Donald Trump's announcement to delay additional tariffs on Canada and Mexico for 30 days, the MOFCOM spokesperson said that the US' unilateral imposition of tariffs seriously violates WTO rules and is of serious nature.

It is a typical practice of unilateralism and trade protectionism, which seriously undermines the rules-based multilateral trading system, disrupts the stability of the global industrial chain and supply chain, and exacerbates global trade tensions, He pointed out.

"China is willing to work with relevant countries to clearly advocate free trade and multilateralism, jointly respond to the challenges of unilateralism and trade protectionism, and maintain the orderly and stable development of international trade," the spokesperson said.
