One of the operational goals of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements violates the Constitution, as its meaning is tantamount to overthrowing the fundamental system of China laid down in the Constitution, Chief Secretary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) made the remarks while commenting on the legal disbandment of the organization.

The HKSAR government's position is very clear that there is no room for compromise in regard to national security matters, John Lee said on Wednesday after the alliance was removed from the Companies Registry.

Lee said ending the "one-party dictatorship" had been one of five operational goals of the alliance. The goal is equivalent to ending the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), which is contrary to the Constitution. The Constitution states that the socialist system under the leadership of the CPC is the fundamental system of the People's Republic of China.

"Ending the one-party dictatorship" is tantamount to overthrowing the fundamental system of China laid down in the Constitution, its real intention is to subvert state power and endanger national security. Therefore, the Chief Executive in conjunction with the Executive Council made the decision to disband the alliance, Lee said.

The spokesperson from the Office for Safeguarding National Security of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR also said the Hong Kong Alliance had participated in the subversion of state power and is a "cancer" that undermines social stability in Hong Kong.

The breakup of the alliance fully fulfills the responsibility of the HKSAR government to safeguard national security, the spokesperson said who called it a "rightful move."

"The HKSAR Government has a responsibility to take action to prevent, suppress and punish acts that threaten national security. When such a threat happens, the HKSAR has an active duty to take action. We will be resolute,'' Lee said.

Three former leaders from the alliance were charged with "incitement to subversion" under the security law and are awaiting trial, reports said.
