After US President Joe Biden declared to extend a national emergency with respect to Hong Kong, the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region condemned the US government's continuous meddling in Hong Kong affairs - purely China's internal affairs, and urged it to correct its mistakes.
Out of the purpose of causing chaos in Hong Kong and suppressing China, the US has been distorting the "one country, two systems" principle by meddling in Hong Kong affairs and supporting various anti-China rioters. These actions blatantly trample on international laws and basic norms of international relationship, the spokesperson of the commissioner's office said in a public statement on Thursday. It also severely challenges China's sovereignty, security and economic interests.
The so-called national emergency that Biden mentioned was first announced by the former US president Donald Trump. It gives the US president sweeping powers to impose sanctions on external entities.
"The situation with respect to Hong Kong, including recent actions taken by China to fundamentally undermine Hong Kong's autonomy, continues to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the US," said a statement on the website of the White House.
The determination of the Chinese government and people in safeguarding the country's sovereignty, security, and economic interests should not be underestimated, the Chinese spokesperson said. Under the national security law and the electoral reform for Hong Kong, the city has undergone massive changes from chaos to stability, and nobody will succeed in trying to upend the progress the city has made so far.
The US has made several mistakes and still misjudges Hong Kong. It's time the US abandon its fantasy of trying to suppress China by using Hong Kong, otherwise, it will face the collective opposition of the Chinese people, the spokesperson of the commissioner's office noted.
