Taiwan to provide assistance to Hong Kongers: Tsai

Taipei, May 27 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) said Wednesday that she and Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) have decided the government will launch a program to provide assistance to Hong Kong people arriving in Taiwan.

The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC), Taiwan's top agency in charge of cross-strait interaction, will draft and implement the plan following cross-department coordination, Tsai said, adding that she hopes the MAC will roll out the plan as soon as possible.

Tsai said the government will fund the plan, which is expected to focus on the residency rights, accommodation and care for Hong Kongers seeking shelter in Taiwan.

Tsai, who doubles as the chairwoman of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), made the remarks prior to attending a DPP Central Executive Committee meeting, after China announced last week it would introduce a national security law for Hong Kong.

The law would ban subversion, separatism or acts of foreign interference against the central Chinese government and would allow Beijing to set up "security organs" in the territory, which many fear could undermine the autonomy of the special administrative region and the civil liberties of its residents.

The draft legislation was submitted to the third session of China's 13th National People's Congress (NPC) for deliberation last Friday.
