Taipei, July 12 (CNA) A Chinese naval formation led by China's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, entered Taiwan's air defense identification zone (ADIZ) at 2:40 a.m. Wednesday, the Ministry of National Defense said later in the morning.

The flotilla left Hong Kong at noon Tuesday and was sailing northward west of the Taiwan Strait's median line, according to a statement issued by the ministry.

Noting that it was closely following the ships' movements, the ministry said it had not detected any unusual hostile activity or situations in the Taiwan Strait.

The battle group set off from a military port in Qingdao on June 25 for a cross-region training operation. It headed to Hong Kong on July 5 for a five-day port call.
