Taipei, Jan. 13 (CNA) Russia will deliver its S-400 advanced surface-to-air missile system and 40N6E anti-air missiles to China in 2017, the latest edition of the Canada-based Kanwa Defense Review has said.

An authoritative source with Russian state-controlled arms producer Almaz-Antey told the review about the delivery, which will also include new radar and command and control systems enabling China to fully monitor the Taiwan Strait.

The source said the new 40N6E missile has a range of over 380 kilometers and can intercept ballistic missiles traveling at speeds of up to 4,800 meters per second.

China's current S-300PMU2 surface-to-air missile can intercept targets flying at 2,800 meters per second.

The radar system used by the S-400 surface-to-air missile is similar in appearance to the radar used by S-300PMU2, but has far better capabilities, the review said.

The search radar of the S-400 uses the 91N6E panoramic radar detection system with a maximum range of 600 kilometers and has IFF (identification friend or foe) capabilities, an upgrade over the PMU2's 64N6E2 radar system that has a range of 300 kilometers and can search for 300 targets simultaneously.

The command and control system has also been upgraded, the review said. The S-300PMU2 uses the 54K6E2 system, while the S-400 uses a 55K6E2 system that has faster data transmission and a communication range increased to within 100 kilometers.
