Beijing will refuse to accept Washington's demand to scrap the Air Defense Identification Zone over the East China Sea because it would be a "major loss of face for China," an analyst says.
In an interview with Press TV on Tuesday, Bryce Wakefield, who is assistant professor at the Leiden University Institute for Area Studies, said China made the move "unilaterally."
"I think it's therefore reasonable for the United States perhaps to ask China to pedal back on this unilateral move whether China will pay any attention to the United States is a different story because of course to renegotiate or to rescind the Air Defense Identification Zone would be a major loss of face for China," he said.
On Monday, the United States called on China to scrap its air defense zone.
"The fact that China's announcement has caused confusion and increased the risk of accidents only further underscores the validity of concerns and the need for China to rescind the procedures," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.
US Vice President Joe Biden, who is currently in Japan, expressed concerns about the issue.
'We, the United States are deeply concerned by the attempt to unilaterally change the status quo in the East China Sea,' Biden told a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Tuesday.
'This action has raised regional tensions and increased the risk of accidents and miscalculation. We are closely consulting with our allies on this matter here in Japan and in Korea which I will soon visit, later this week,' he added.
