Taipei, Nov. 28 (CNA) China's aircraft carrier battle group headed by the Liaoning made an 'innocent passage' in a broader sense through the Taiwan Strait Thursday, military sources in Taipei said.
As of 3 p.m., the battle group had cleared the Bashi Channel between Taiwan and the Philippines and was continuing a passage south into the South China Sea, the sources said.
The Liaoning and at least four other Chinese warships accompanying her stayed on the Chinese side of the Taiwan Strait during the passage, according to the sources. The strait is between 130 kilometers and 180 kilometers in width.
Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, 'innocent passage' usually refers to the right of a vessel to pass through the territorial waters of another state, subject to certain restrictions.
