Chinese Dissident Leaves U.S. Embassy in Beijing

RIA Novosti

21:10 02/05/2012 MOSCOW, May 2 (RIA Novosti) - Chen Guangcheng, a blind Chinese dissident who fled house arrest and took refuge in the American Embassy in Beijing six days ago left it on Wednesday after receiving safety guarantees from the Chinese government, Xinhua reported.

China urged the United States to stop “misleading the public” following remarks by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

“Chen Guangcheng, a native of Yinan county in eastern China's Shandong province, entered the U.S. Embassy in Beijing in late April and left of his own volition after a six-day stay at the embassy,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said`.

Clinton said in a statement she was "pleased that we were able to facilitate Chen Guangcheng's stay and departure from the U.S. Embassy in a way that reflected his choices and our values."

"Mr. Chen has a number of understandings with the Chinese government about his future, including the opportunity to pursue higher education in a safe environment," she said.

Chen, a lawyer who had campaigned against forced abortions and sterilizations conducted as part of China's policy of limiting families to one child, entered the American Embassy due to "exceptional circumstances, including his disabilities," a senior American official said.
