China Puts 6 Uyghurs On Terrorist List

China's Ministry of Public Security has announced that it added six men to its terrorist list, all ethnic Uyghurs.

The Ministry said on April 6 that the six are members of the East Turkestan Islamic Movement and they were involved in recruiting and training members for the organization, had provided funding for terrorism and had promoted the use of violence, including suicide bombings.

Unrest among the Uyghur population in their traditional homeland, now China's western Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, has been increasing in recent months with an attack on a police station in the city of Hotan last July, violence in Kashgar the same month, and an Uyghur man attacking people in the town of Yecheng with a knife and axe in February.

Uyghur groups outside China say the violence is a response to Beijing's repressive policies and attempts to resettle ethnic Han Chinese in Xinjiang.
