INTRO: Chinese state media say at least 70 sailors have been killed in an accident on board a submarine. Mindee Hansen has this report from Hong Kong.

TEXT: China's Xinhua news agency reports that 70 officers and crew members were killed in an accident on board a submarine, one of the worst accidents in Chinese naval history.

The report says the incident happened off the coast of Liaoning province, and was caused by mechanical problems. There are no known survivors.

Few details about the accident-- beyond the fact that it occurred - have been released, including when it happened and how the sailors died. The submarine has been towed to an undisclosed port.

The Number 361 submarine - believed to be a Ming class conventional patrol submarine attached to China's eastern fleet - was taking part in a training exercise, according to Xinhua.

China's People's Liberation Army has a fleet of about 90 submarines. (Signed)
