Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)
State Department Noon Briefing
U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
DAILY PRESS BRIEFING
THURSDAY, APRIL 19, 2001 1:10 P.M.
(ON THE RECORD UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED)
Q: In the Chinese press conference that was held this morning, they
said that there could be a devastating effect if the US decided to
give Taiwan arms on the range of the Aegis - I'm pronouncing that
wrong - Aegis ship, and I am wondering if the US is concerned by
this, or do you see this as just rhetoric before an announcement?
MR. BOUCHER: I think we have heard statements from the Chinese about
their position on Taiwan arms sales, and we have made quite clear our
decisions have to be based on Taiwan's legitimate defensive needs.
That is the basis for the discussion that is under way within the
Administration. But I don't have anything further on that at this
moment.
