Remarks by Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Sun Yuxi on the Passage of the Bill on China's PNTR by US Senate

The US Senate voted on September 20 in favor of China's Permanent Normal Trading Relations (PNTR) status, a decision that is in line with the principle of non-discrimination of the World Trade Organization. The realization of US Permanent Normal Trading Relations with China can help create a lasting and stable environment for China-US economic cooperation and trade. It not only serves the fundamental interests of the peoples of both China and the United States, but is also of great significance to the healthy development of China-US relations. Over the years, people of insight from various circles in the United States have made vigorous and unremitting efforts for the attainment of this goal. We hereby would like to express our appreciation to them.

Having said this, we must point out that the bill on China's PNTR passed by the US Senate retains those elements of the bill passed by the US House of Representatives that undermine China's interests and interfere in China's internal affairs. The Chinese Government has made clear to the US Government its solemn position of firm opposition to those contents.
The steady development of economic and trade ties between China and the US since the establishment of diplomatic relations has brought enormous benefits to the two peoples and has also given a big boost to the development of Sino-US bilateral relations in other fields. It is our hope that China and the US will build on the resolution of the PNTR issue as a new starting point and make concerted efforts to achieve new progress in Sino-US economic cooperation and trade, and the bilateral relations at large in the new century.
