Ottawa, Aug. 30 (CNA) Canada's national broadcaster reported Wednesday that mainland China is facing one of the largest civil disturbances in recent years.
Thousands of farmers are in revolt near the cradle of the communist revolution in Jiangxi province, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. (CBC) said.
According to local officials, heavily armed paramilitary police were sent to the region earlier this month, the CBC said.
The police were moved in after rampaging farmers smashed government offices and looted the homes of the rich, the CBC said. In the most recent clash, the report noted, more than 20,000 peasants staged a violent protest against heavy taxes.
Scores of farmers were arrested, and authorities said that it took five days to bring the rioting and looting under control, the CBC said in its daily major news broadcast. (By S. C. Chang)
