Tokyo, Jan. 30 (CNA) Russia and Beijing may have reached a technology agreement under which Russia authorizes Beijing to produce Russia's most modern SU-30 jet fighters in mainland China, according to a report by the Sino-Japanese Information Center.
Japan's Asahi Shinbun daily quoted the Sino-Japanese Information Center, a private Canadian institute for research on war strategy, as reporting that the agreement was contained in a military cooperation memorandum signed between the defense ministers of Beijing and Russia on Jan. 17 in Moscow.
News sources earlier reported that Beijing has already begun to produce SU-27 jet fighters in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province, under authorization from Russia. There were also reports that Beijing wanted to purchase SU-30s so as to counter French-made Mirage 2000 and US-made F-16 jet fighters purchased by Taiwan. (By Mike Chang & Edward Chen)
