Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)
Spokesperson on the reported U.S. arms sale to Taiwan
(March 9, 2000)
Q: It it reported that on March 7th, the US Defense Ministry formally nortified the congress of its plan to sell to Taiwan 162 improved type of "HAWK"air defense missiles and the equipment required to upgrade the air defense radar from TPS-43F to TPS-75V. The total value of the sale is around $200,000,000. What is your comment?
A: We are deeply concerned over the aforementioned report, and have already made solemn representation to the US side.
The Chinese Government and people are always firmly opposed to the US sales of sophisticated weapons to Taiwan. The US Government has made serious commitment on the Taiwan question to the Chinese Government and people, i.e. it will adhere to one China principle and observe the three joint communiqués between China and the US and its "three no "commitments. However, the US side keeps on violating its commitments by selling sophisticated weaponry to Taiwan massively and persistently. It constitutes a severe encroachment on China's sovereignty and flagrant interference in China's internal affairs, fans up the aggressive clamoring of the forces for"Taiwan's independence"to split the motherland, and is a major cause for the tension in the Taiwan Strait. At present, China-US relations and cross-strait relations are both in a crucial moment of high sensitivity. The Chinese side strongly urges the US side strictly honor the three joint communiqués and its relevant commitments, fully recognize how pernicious its arms sales to Taiwan is, correct its error immediately, and stop all arms sale to Taiwan.
