Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

Spokesperson on the reported U.S. selling of destroyers with "Aegis"system and "Patriot III"anti-missile system to Taiwan

(March 7, 2000)

I've taken note of the relevant report. The Chinese side hereby expresses its deep concern over it.

An early realization of the reunification of the motherland is the common aspiration of all Chinese people including the Taiwan compatriots. The attempt of the Taiwan authorities to run counter to the historical trend is not only futile, but also detrimental to the relaxation of tension in the strait and the development of the cross-strait relations. Besides, it also jeopardizes the peace and stability of the Asia-pacific region, and is, therefore, doomed to failure.

What must be pointed out is that the Chinese Government and people are firmly opposed to the US arms sales to Taiwan and the US provision to Taiwan with any TMD system and the relevant technologies, equipment and supporting system. This position of the Chinese side is unswerving. We strongly urge the US side strictly honor the three joint communiqués between China and the US and its relevant commitments, make clear its commitment of not selling destroyers with "Aegis"system and "Patriot III"anti-missile system to Taiwan and refrain from doing anything that may cause tension in the cross-strait relations, anything that may obstruct China's peaceful reunification or anything that is not be conducive to the steady development of China-US relations.
