Xinhua Commentary: Fight Separatist Attempt to The End
The Xinhua News Agency on September 17 released a commentator's article titled "Fight Lee Teng-hui's Separatist Attempt to the End."
The article said the Chinese government and people have launched a series of fights against Lee Teng-hui since he made the "two state" remarks on July 9.
The international community has also reaffirmed their "One China" stand, and the intention of the separatist forces led by Lee to amend the "constitution" at the "Third National Assembly" was totally crushed.
"Struggles during the past two months clearly show that the Chinese government and people will not tolerate the open provocations of the separatist forces led by Lee," says the commentator, adding, "We have the ability and determination to safeguard the territorial integrity and sovereignty of China, and our war is inviolable, just and forceful."
The "two-state" remarks are a serious fallacy aimed at splitting China, the commentator points out. Lee's remarks are an open provocation to the "one China" policy, and destroyed the basis for cross-Straits dialogue, as well as the peaceful reunification of the country.
The Chinese government and people gave a quick reaction to Lee' s remarks, and Chinese President Jiang Zemin pointed out on July 18, during a telephone conversation with US President Bill Clinton, that Lee has taken a dangerous step, which has exposed his intention to split China. Jiang said there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China. He warned the Taiwan side to stop all separatist activities at once.
President Jiang Zemin stressed that China has never promised not to use force to take back Taiwan during his meeting on Sept. 11 with US President Clinton at the 7th informal meeting of leaderships of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).
People of all walks in China slammed Lee Teng-hui's "two-state" remarks, and people in Taiwan also showed their worry about the tension in cross-Straits relations.
The commentator points out that Lee's "two state"-remarks was intended to destroy the peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific Region, and even in the world. Therefore, the international community called Lee a "troublemaker."
Up to now, over 100 countries including the United States, Japan and Russia, have reiterated their "one China" stance.
Senior officials from the Taiwan Affairs Office under the Communist Party of China's (CPC) Central Committee and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council refuted Lee Teng-hui's separatist remarks on July 20.
They pointed out that the divisive forces in Taiwan are attempting to revise the so-called "constitution" and "laws" of Taiwan in line with the "two state" concept, to realize the " independence of Taiwan".
They warned the divisive forces in Taiwan to stop playing with fire, and called on people of insight in Taiwan to distance themselves from Lee's line and make contributions to the peaceful reunification of the motherland.
But Lee Teng-hui still insisted on his "two state" remarks, and even wanted to seek a legal basis for them.
The commentary says that Lee has underestimated the Chinese government's and the Chinese people's determination to safeguard China's sovereignty and territorial integrity and it emphasizes that Lee's separatist attempts are doomed to failure.
"We Chinese people have the determination and ability to smash the splittist force's provocation and protect the sovereignty of China, and accomplish the country's peaceful reunification process, " the commentary concludes. (Xinhua)
