VOICED AT:
INTRO: A spokeswoman for the U-S embassy in Beijing
says an injured American pro-Tibet activist has been
evacuated for medical treatment from a remote western
province of China. VOA correspondent Roger Wilkison
reports 29-year-old Daja Meston suffered spinal
injuries and broken bones when he fell from or jumped
out of a third-floor window in what was apparently an
effort to escape Chinese police.
TEXT: The embassy spokeswoman says Mr. Meston was
evacuated from China Thursday afternoon. She would
not say where he would be treated or under what
conditions he was released by Chinese authorities.
Mr. Meston was flown out of Xining, the capital of
western Qinghai province, 11 days after police
detained him along with an Australian researcher and a
Tibetan interpreter near the site of a controversial
World Bank-sponsored resettlement project that has
aroused the ire of pro-Tibet activists. The project
aims to resettle poor ethnic Chinese farmers on lands
inhabited by Tibetans.
The Australian was deported last Saturday. There is
no word on the fate of the Tibetan. Chinese
officials accused the two foreigners of taking
photographs of restricted areas and conducting illegal
interviews. (Signed)
