  • Bulgaria and Slovakia Reject Missile Reduction August 20, 1997 - Bulgaria rejected the U.S. State Department's call to scrap its medium range SS-23 missiles. The Clinton Administration asked the country to hasten the destruction of the weapons, banned under the 1987 Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry responded that it was "not in the national interest" to destroy their missiles.
