
Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and Embraer equip the Brazilian Navy for the future

The consortium Águas Azuis was selected as the preferred bidder for the construction of four new corvettes of the Tamandaré class.
The consortium Águas Azuis, consisting of thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, Embraer Defense & Security and Atech has been selected by the Brazilian Navy as the preferred bidder for the construction of four defense ships of the corvette class Tamandaré (CCT).
The result, announced today (March 28), represents a new milestone for the country's maritime defense and marine industry.
Under the leadership of thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, the member companies of the consortium Águas Azuis will form a joint venture (Specific Purpose Company) for the execution phase of the program. The companies and their subsidiaries have a long-standing relationship and a strong presence in the country. This strong and strong partnership in Brazil is characterized in particular by securing proven technologies not only for the CCT program in the long term, but also to develop future strategic defense projects in the country.

National sovereignty
With the CCT program, the Brazilian Navy will expand and modernize its fleet. By commissioning the four Corvettes between 2024 and 2028, the Navy receives new escorts. Its main tasks are to defend against possible threats, to protect maritime traffic and to monitor Brazilian territorial waters - the so-called "Blue Amazon" with a total area of more than 4.5 million square kilometers.The escorts will also play an important role in peace missions and humanitarian missions , thus making an important contribution to Brazilian diplomacy.
The CCT program will make a valuable contribution to the Brazilian economy:
- a local share of more than 40% in shipbuilding and the development of state-of-the-art systems;
- Creation of more than 1,000 direct and approximately 4,000 indirect jobs;
- promoting competitiveness, meeting the future needs of the Brazilian Navy and exporting naval defense products;
- involvement of research and development centers;
- In-service support capability for lifetime preservation of high-tech products.
The program includes strong technology transfer for military shipbuilding and management and platform management systems. As one of the most modern shipyards in Brazil, Aliança-Oceana, shipbuilder of the consortium Águas Azuis, will be the recipient of the technology transfer in military shipbuilding. The shipyard is located in Itajaí (state of Santa Catarina), a region with a highly developed shipbuilding industry. The shipyard is part of the Oceana Offshore Group, a company with more than 20 years of experience in shipbuilding and ship operation for offshore oil claims. With an area of approximately 31 hectares, Oceana is equipped with 4 to 6 offshore vessels with state-of-the-art engineering and construction systems to build each year - with the associated high level of automation and the use of state-of-the-art technology.
The company also has facilities in Niterói (Rio de Janeiro State), which can serve as a logistics and service base for the Brazilian Navy.
Atech, an Embraer Group company, will provide the CMS (Combat Management System) and Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) for the Tamandaré Corvettes and is the recipient of the technology transfer in collaboration with ATLAS ELEKTRONIK (a subsidiary of thyssenkrupp Marine Systems) and L3 MAPPS , With offices in Rio de Janeiro (RJ) and São Paulo (SP), Atech employs more than 500 engineers specializing in the development of software and hardware for defense applications has unique expertise in systems engineering, orientation and decision making technologies. Embraer Defense & Security will integrate the sensors and weapons into the deployment system, bringing its 50 years of service support experience to the program.

The consortium Águas Azuis has submitted an offer to the Brazilian Navy based on the proven concept of the MEKO® class, a worldwide reference of proven solutions in shipbuilding. The module-based design simplifies the local integration of systems and technology transfer, helping to reduce acquisition, maintenance and modernization costs. The MEKO® class unites cutting-edge technology and rugged combat capability, and is a true ocean-going vessel. The ships have exceptional characteristics in terms of range and stamina. As a result, several navies worldwide have a flexible, versatile combat platform and advanced ships for different missions.
Since 1982, 82 corvettes and frigates of the MEKO® class have been delivered to navies from 14 different nations, 37 of which were built outside of Germany and are still in service - with an expected lifespan of more than 40 years.
