03:59 18.04.2016
Over 230 members of lower house of the Brazilian parliament have voted in support of President Dilma Rousseff's impeachment as over half – 311 – lawmakers have cast their votes during debates broadcast on the national television.
MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – The impeachment vote was called amid protests held throughout Brazil, with the opposition accusing Rousseff of corruption and violation of financial rules by manipulating state bank accounts to close budget gaps.
According to the Globo television channel, just under 80 parliament members have abstained or opposed the impeachment so far. In total, 513 lawmakers will make a decision on the issue.
Rousseff has been facing a wave of public discontent for over a year amid Brazil's struggling economy and a major corruption scandal in the state-owned Petrobras petroleum company.
