EU to develop unified decision on Belarus by February - EU representative

RIA Novosti

17:14 19/01/2011 MOSCOW, January 19 (RIA Novosti) - The EU should develop a unified decision concerning the Belarus situation by the end of January, the head of the EU delegation to Russia, Fernando Valenzuela, said on Wednesday.

"What happened in Belarus breached principles and values that are very important to us. The EU position is under consideration. If the situation doesn't change, the decision will be taken by the end of January," Valenzuela said during a press conference in Moscow.

The Belarusian opposition in Minsk arranged an unauthorized protest after it was announced that current leader Alexander Lukashenko won December's presidential election.

Authorities detained hundreds of protesters including opposition presidential candidates.

After this, the EU spoke about imposing sanctions on Belarusian officials, who, according to the EU, are responsible for persecuting the opposition. According to diplomatic sources, more than 100 Belarusian officials could be subjected to sanctions.

On Tuesday, the Polish news agency PAP quoted a source in the Polish Foreign Ministry stating that entry into the country is banned for Lukashenko and some judges, prosecutors, and heads of services, which Warsaw believes are responsible for persecuting the opposition after the presidential elections in Belarus.
