  • US offers insider access to spy data By HAMISH McDONALD, Sydney Morning Herald 01/08/98 The United States yesterday agreed to sharply upgrade Australia's involvement in its new space-based missile early-warning and monitoring systems. The agreement will see Australian defence personnel stationed in the heart of the US early-warning system at deeply protected headquarters in Colorado Springs, in the Rocky Mountains. With retirement of the existing early-warning "DSP" satellites, the USAF will close Nurrungar after 30 years operation and rely on two new antennae to be built at the Pine Gap intelligence station near Alice Springs.
