Thad Cochran
PRESS ALERT: Cochran Chairs Governmental Affairs
Washington, D.C. - Senator Thad Cochran (R-MS) will chair a hearing on "Proliferation: Russian Case Studies" on Thursday, June 5, before the Governmental Affairs Subcommittee on International Security, Proliferation, and Federal Services. The hearing will begin at 2:00 p.m. in Room 342 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building.
The hearing will explore cases of Russian weapons proliferation, focusing on Russia's exports of weapons of mass destruction components and technologies and missile delivery systems to various countries, including Iran, Iraq, and India.
"Technology for both nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles continues to flow out of Russia to each of these countries. Russia must halt these technology flows if it is to be counted on as a reliable partner of the United States. In past hearings the subcommittee has examined troubling cases of Chinese proliferation. Unfortunately, much of the technology leaving Russia is just as troubling in its potential future use against the United States," said Cochran.
The following witnesses will testify before the Subcommittee: Mr. Robert Einhorn, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Nonproliferation, Bureau of Political Military Affairs, Department of State; Dr. William C. Potter, Director, Center for Nonproliferation Studies, Monterey Institute of International Studies; and Dr.Richard H. Speier, an independent consultant and expert on the subject of missile proliferation.
