509th Maintenance Squadron
The 509th Maintenance Squadron's Munitions Flight has supported many activities of the 509th BW but perhaps none more important than Operation Allied Force from March 23 through May 22, 1999. The squadron toiled ceaselessly to keep the bombers flying to end the conflict in Kosovo. Unlike other bomb specialists working on aircraft close to the Operation Allied Force theater of operations, the 509th airmen pulled duty at Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo., almost 15 hours as the B-2 flies, from Kosovo. They also built the most modern of precision-guided bombs: Joint Direct Attack Munitions.
In 1993, with the fast-approaching arrival of the 509th BW's first B-2, many of the 509th's squadrons began returning to active duty. Since the squadron's inactivation in 1990, however, many changes in the organization of Air Force wing had occurred. These alterations also reached down into the squadron level. One of these modifications called for transferring many maintenance functions to the operational squadrons. As a result, a wing would have only one assigned maintenance squadron. To reflect this new initiative, the Air Force decided to rename its remaining maintenance squadrons. The 509th's turn came on March 12, 1993, when it became the 509th Maintenance Squadron. Then, on July 15, 1993, the Air Force activated the 509th Maintenance Squadron at Whiteman and assigned it to the 509th Logistics Group.
