Nguyen Xuan Phuc

Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Pham Minh Chinh were re-elected as Vietnam’s president and prime minister on 26 July 2021. The duo, who took their respective offices in April 2021, were sworn in for a five-year term after legislators voted in the first session of the 15th National Assembly in the capital Hanoi. Phuc, 67, and Chinh, 63, will serve as the president and prime minister until 2026.

In his address to legislators, Phuc, who was the country’s prime minister from 2016 to 2021, said he will work with parliament and the government “to realize the vision of comprehensive development, in which no one is left behind, especially in remote and economic challenged areas.” He vowed to uphold “unity and consensus and promote democracy in order to let the nation firmly move forward”.

Nguyen Xuan Phuc was part of Vietnam's new ruling triumvirate, joining party Secretary-General Nguyen Phu Trong and President Tran Dai Quang. Trong beat back a challenge to a seat on the 19-member ruling Politburo from Nguyen Tan Dung during the January 2016 party congress.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc was elected to the Politburo 27 January 2016, in which he is ranked 14th, making him the lowest-ranked member of the Politburo. He was expected to become the prime minister. He replaced Nguyen Tan Dung, who had had led economic reforms over the past 10 years and had harbored ambitions for the top job.

Quang Nam People's Committee Chairman, Nguyen Xuan Phuc was born July 20, 1954 in Qu?ng Nam province. He holds a B.A. in industrial economics from the National Economics University of Hanoi. Phuc was one of the first graduates of the Fulbright Economic Teaching Program based in HCMC. From 1978 to 2001, he held a number of positions within the provincial government including the Director of the Department of Planning and Investment and director of the Tourism Department. Phuc is regarded as one of the individuals responsible for Hoi An's emergence as a tourist center. In Central Vietnam he was rumored as of 2005 to be a possible candidate for promotion to Hanoi should the GVN decide to create a Minister for Tourism.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc 16 June 2012 affirmed that the economy has overcome difficulties and has started to recover. He said the growth of gross domestic product (GDP) at 6 per cent this year, inflation at 7-8 per cent and other targets set by the National Assembly, were possible. He made the statement in response to concerns about economic growth and support measures for enterprises during the 3rd session of the 13th National Assembly. He said all results related to economic growth and production activities in the second quarter were better than the first quarter.

Deputy PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc presented PM’s Decision to the local leaders. A ceremony was held in Vinh Yen city, the northern province of Vinh Phuc, on 28 December 2014 to celebrate the 115th anniversary of its foundation ((December 29, 1899 – 2014) and announce the Prime Minister's Decision recognising Vinh Yen as a type II city.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung proposed a list of five Deputy Prime Ministers and 22 ministers and heads of ministerial level agencies on the afternoon of 31 July 2015. Director of the Government Office Nguyen Xuan Phuc, was Permanent Deputy Director of the Government Office.

The increase in traffic accidents is due to local governments’ neglectfulness, said Deputy Prime Minister cum chairman of Vietnam’s National Traffic Safety Committee Nguyen Xuan Phuc at an online conference to review the whole year’s mission and to implement the task for next year on 13 January 2015. Nguyen Xuan Phuc asked local authorities to mobilize all police forces and traffic inspectors to clamp down on traffic violations. In his dispatch to the Minister of Public Security, the Minister if Transport and leaders of traffic safety committee in districts, Deputy Prime Minister Phuc ordered to implement measures to ensure traffic safety on the national holidays.

The fight against corruption is a long steadfast process that requires a strong will and high resolve, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc stressed 24 December 2015. The deputy PM was speaking at a meeting on December 24 to sum up ten years since the implementation of the Law on Corruption Prevention and Control in Ho Chi Minh City. He highly appreciated specific actions by the city’s Party committee and government in the ten years since the implementation of the anti-corruption law, consistently considering it an urgent and long-term task with great significance in building and protecting the country.
