"Bureviy" ["Stormy"] MLRS

The "Bureviy" ["Stormy"] MLRS is a Ukrainian modernization of the "Uragan" rocket salvo fire system, the arsenal of which includes the entire range of ammunition for the 220 mm BM-27 MLRS. "Bureviy" is one of the newest developments of the Shepetiv Repair Plant. In December 2021, the State Enterprise "Shepetiv Repair Plant" received a batch of Tatra T815-7 chassis for the production of the new Ukrainian 220-mm multiple rocket launcher system "Bureviy".

The Shepetiv repair plant, in accordance with a joint decision with the Ministry of Defense, conducted tests of the Bureviy rocket launcher system, which is intended to replace the outdated Uragan surface-to-air missiles in the Armed Forces. Fire tests of the new MLRS took place at one of the military ranges in November 2020.

"The tests of the Bureviy are carried out in cooperation with the Ministry of Defense, which is interested in this machine. Conceptual approach in its creation: maximum digitization, increase in firing range, mobility, as well as comfort and safety of the military. We completely designed and manufactured the entire guide package and guidance system. They are integrated on a new high-speed chassis, which will be equipped with a fully armored cabin in the future," said Oleg Turinskyi, director of the Shepetiv repair plant.

The wheeled self-propelled launcher of the jet system is equipped with a digital fire control system, including a battlefield information exchange system. The Tatra T815-7 chassis with an 8x8 wheel formula is specially designed for the release of the new Ukrainian 220-mm rocket salvo fire system. They were modified in accordance with the requirements of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In November 2020, the Uragan MSG on the Tatra chassis was presented.

The fact that there are no accurate data on the number of "Bureviev" in the formation of the reactive artillery of the Armed Forces of Ukraine adds a special intrigue to this story. And for the first time such systems "lit up" in the public space only in June 2022. At first glance, the "Bureviy" system is simply an upgrade of the Soviet "Uragan" multiple rocket launcher system, transferred to the latest Tatra T815-7 chassis. But "Bureviy" has its fundamental differences.

First of all, there is an opportunity to directly receive targeting instructions for firing from reconnaissance-strike UAVs. The operator of the MLRS does not need to leave the car's cabin to aim at the target. The modern digital fire control and information exchange systems, which significantly shortens the time from deployment to the start of firing. It is enough for the crew to press a few buttons without leaving the armored cabin to send a package of sixteen rockets to the enemy, and then quickly change the firing position.

And most importantly, there is an option to use two types of projectiles at once, Soviet projectiles with a firing range of up to 35 km and Typhoon-2 projectiles from KB "Pivdzhne" with a firing range of up to 65 km. In a matter of seconds, they send sixteen 220-mm lethal rockets at the enemy. These MLRSs do not have the option of automatic reloading of rocket projectiles. Unlike the same M142 HIMARS, in which reloading takes about 5-10 minutes.

Regarding the new T815-7 chassis from the Czech Tatra. It is worth noting that the French CAESAR self-propelled guns and the Slovak Zuzana 2 self-propelled guns are mounted on similar chassis . Thanks to the 8x8 wheel formula, large suspension strokes and a powerful engine, the Bureviy system has high passability and maneuverability. Instead of a semi-automatic Czech box from Tatra, an Allison automatic transmission was installed. Another feature is an additional power unit, which allows saving the resource of the main diesel engine (power 300 kW, maximum torque 2100 Nm).

"For the Ministry of Defense, one of the main priorities is the qualitative renewal of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In particular, in the matter of long-range artillery systems, which should not only extend the range of action, but also be placed on modern reliable mobile platforms. Currently, a large proportion of such systems in the Armed Forces are still placed on outdated Soviet machines, which are already exhausting their resources. Considering the fact that, despite the large number of orders for the Ukrainian army, KrAZ is currently in bankruptcy proceedings, we have to find an alternative. If Bureviy passes all the tests, the transition of the Armed Forces to new wheeled platforms will be considered, which meet all the requirements of NATO member countries, with the subsequent localization of their production in Ukraine," Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine Oleksandr Mironyuk told Defense Express in November 2020.
