Bronetekhnika Ukrainy (Ukrainian Armor)

Officially established in July 1999, Bronetekhnika Ukrainy [Bronetekhnika Ukraina / Bronetekhnika Ukrayiny] consists of 34 specialized production plants and design bureaus, led by the Malyshev plant and Morozov design bureau, both in Kharkiv, and authorized to deal directly with foreign customers. Early in November 1999, Ukraine's Anti-monopoly Committee agreed to set up the Bronetekhnika Ukrainy (Armoured Vehicles of Ukraine) concern, founded by the country's mainly state-owned defence complex enterprises. The activities of the new concern will be aimed at the development, production and sales of armoured vehicles and sophisticated science-consuming military products.

The Ukrainian concern is best known for its capacity to produce modern versions of Soviet-type tanks and other armored vehicles. It currently offers production of updated T-72 and T-84 battle tanks featuring more powerful, 1,200 HP engines, improved armor and new fire control systems, and is working with a Swiss company on joint production of a tank gun prototype which meets NATO standards.

In October 2001 it was reported that the Bronetekhnika Ukrayiny company is creating a tank repair and maintenance facility in Pakistan. The deal is within the framework of the big contract to supply 320 tanks T-80UD to Pakistan signed in July 1996. The creation of service facilities for field conditions and a repair base will cost Pakistan $10 million, in addition to the contract signed in summer 1996. The "period of a stand-off" between the Malyshev tank-producing plant and the Morozov design bureau has ended. Apart from the Malyshev plant and the design bureau, the design institute Transmashproekt and companies specializing in producing optics and electronic equipment participate in the project.
