21st Fighter Squadron

The status of the 21st Fighter Squadron is not entirely clear as various sources maintain the unit is located in Taiwan at Chiayi Air Base, while various Taiwan Government news sources and the US Air Force indicate that at least a portion of the 21st FS is located at Luke Air Force Base, with 10 F-16s, and takes part in regular exercises and advanced training with the US Air Force.

The training program is part of the agreement reached between the United States and Taiwan over the sale of the 150 F-16s in 1992. Also taking part in the training program are pilots from countries such as Singapore, Turkey, South Korea and the Philippines.

At any given time roughly 10 ROCAF pilots are at Luke AFB as are an unknown number of ground crewmen. Once training is complete the pilots and ground crews rotate back to Taiwan.

It is not excatly clear when the training program began, its history, or how many pilots have gone through the program.

In mid 2002 pilots from the 21st Fighter Squadron began training for in-flight refueling with a KC-10 tanker.
