BREM T-16 ARV "Armata" (GBTU Index - object 152)
The BREM chassis is made on the basis of a unified interspecific tracked platform "Armata" with a partial hull modification. Internal fuel tanks are located outside the crew compartment. The crew compartment contains three crew seats and three reserve seats, two crew hatches are made in the roof of the crew compartment, a unified remotely controlled weapon station is located behind the crew hatches, an emergency hatch is made in the vertical aft wall of the crew compartment. Removable-modular protection containers are installed on the hull, roof of the manned compartment and hatch covers, lattice screens are installed on the bow and side projections, and heat shielding shields are installed in areas of intense heat radiation. The ARV (Armored Recovery Vehicle or Tank Recovery Vehicle) was designed to fulfill the urgent need to recover disabled tanks from the battle field for safe repairs away from the front lines. An armored recovery vehicle (ARV) is an armored vehicle used during combat for recovery or repair of battle-damaged and inoperable armored fighting vehicles. The term "Armored Repair and Recovery Vehicle" (ARRV) is also used.
ARVs are normally built on the chassis+ of a main battle tank+ (MBT), but some are also constructed on the basis of other armoured fighting vehicle+s, mostly armoured personnel carrier+s (APCs). ARVs are usually built on the basis of a vehicle in the same class as they are supposed to recover; a tank-based ARV is used to recover tanks, while an APC-based one recovers APCs (it does not have the power to tow a much heavier tank).
The armored recovery vehicle (ARV) with winch and crane has been developed for towing armored vehicles and maintaining close support. The crane is mainly used to salvage heavy objects by rotational and vertical motion. Especially, the crane bracket is very important parts due to fixing the ARV's body and rotary joint and preventing the force rotation of crane. Therefore, the crane bracket needs to have an enough strength to endure the high load and it is very important to analyze the stress distribution under loads.
One of the contributing factors to the turnaround time of a vehicle is the vehicle recovery stage. This is particularly so if the area of operations is large, and thus the vehicle must be recovered over a long distance. One way to reduce the recovery time is to adopt a forward maintenance concept, whereby higher level maintenance capabilities (in terms of skillset and spare parts) are deployed forward closer to the frontline instead of at the depot level. In order to enable the forward maintenance concept, there must be a high maintenance supply capacity and the necessary tools for higher level maintenance (such as cranes) must be mobile and ruggedized for the field.
In order to provide a fast response to any recovery needs, there should be a sufficiently wide coverage of recovery vehicles such that any damaged vehicle can be reached within a short time. This, however, means that there must a large fleet size for recovery vehicles. Another way to facilitate fast recovery response is to design the recovery vehicle to have sufficient high speed so that it can keep up with the speed of operations. Hence, most MBTs and IFVs usually have recovery variants that have the same automotive specifications and speed performance.
Every modern army needs not only military vehicles but also various auxiliary equipment. For successful performance of combat missions the armed forces should have auxiliary machines for different purposes, which would solve the transportation, construction and other tasks not related to direct participation in the fighting. For example, armored units needed Armoured Recovery Vehicle (ARV). This technique should be used armored vehicles to evacuate the injured from the battlefield and of the subsequent repair in the field. In the foreseeable future, Russian armed forces have to get new equipment in its class.
A few years ago appeared the first information about the perspective of a unified heavy tracked "Armata" platform, on the basis of which it was proposed to construct the main tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and other equipment, including auxiliary facilities. In particular, the Corporation "Uralvagonzavod" was to create a new ARV, which is proposed to use for the maintenance of future tanks.
Until 2015, there was no exact information about the ARV project based on the "Armata" platform. In September 2015 the situation changed radically. The TV channel "Star" showed a new edition of the program "Military Acceptance", dedicated to the platform "Armata" and armored vehicles on its basis. The program "Armata -" Terra Incognita "were shown the main tank T-14, a heavy combat vehicle class T-15 infantry and Armoured Recovery Vehicle T-16. It is noteworthy that before the program channel "Star" general public never saw the new ARV.
Unfortunately, the authors of the program "Military Acceptance" did not focus on the prospective ARV T-16, limited to a short story about its features before navigating to other technology family. However, they read out some very interesting facts about the features available and showed the machine itself. In spite of the short story and leading specialists, video television program allows carefully considering the new ARV and drawing some conclusions.
It is no secret that the greatest interest of specialists and amateurs is on fighting vehicles, whereas auxiliary systems are rarely awarded a lot of attention. This is probably one of the reasons why T-16 ARV until recently did not appear in the news, and mentioned only in the context of the "Armata" common opportunities and prospects of the project. Thus, all the attention of the public received promising tank and infantry fighting vehicles, and recovery vehicle has remained in the shadows.
Because of all this, until recently, the available information about the project T-16 were sketchy. Moreover, the name T-16 had become known. The prospective ARV had not been given enough attention, and basic information about it in one way or another is a consequence of the analysis of the news throughout the program as a whole. As a result, almost all of the information about the machine T-16 was a result of reflection on published data.
After the announcement of information about the possible construction of ARV-based unified platform "Armata" appeared the first evaluation of appearance of such equipment. It was assumed that the new vehicle will be built on the same chassis as the future tanks, and will also receive a number of special equipment: crane, winch for towing of damaged equipment, etc. At the same time the details of the project had not been formally disclosed.
The Armored Recovery Vehicle T-16 is the next member of the family based on the technology of the unified track "Armata" platform, which affects its basic features. The new ARV is based on a uniform chassis, also used as a basis for tanks and heavy infantry fighting vehicles. This vehicle gets a revised body kit and special equipment allows the crew to perform various operations on the maintenance of the damaged equipment.
As a base, the T-16 used the option "Armata" platform with rear engine compartment. This is primarily related to the application layout and placement of special equipment. The front part of the machine body is given over to an inhabited crew compartment with seats for transportation of crew evacuated tank. According to some reports, there are three crew seats and three seats for tankers.
The armor crew cabin is located in front of the housing and has an asymmetric structure formed with a shift to the left side. This arrangement felling associated with the need to install special equipment. Behind the manned compartment located aft engine-transmission unit with power unit.
A characteristic feature of the "Armata" platform, which distinguishes it from the previous domestic armor, is the use of the integrated power unit. Earlier on tanks and other equipment used in engine and transmission are made as separate units. The draft of the new unified platform means the connection of the engine and gearbox into a single unit. This construction of the power plant provides greater ease of assembly technique at the factory and service in the armed forces. In particular, significantly reduced the time required for the replacement of damaged units.
Like other vehicles in the family, BRAM T-16 is equipped with an X-shaped multi-fuel engine producing more than 1500 hp The exact value of the maximum power of the engine is kept secret, but notes that it is more powerful than all other power units used in domestic tanks. With the engine interlocked reversing automatic transmission, which has eight gears forward and reverse. The latter feature, is expected to increase the mobility of the prospective armor.
The new ARV is unified with other equipment chassis. Its composition is present on the seven track rollers with individual torsion suspension on each side. Apparently, part of the roller is also equipped with additional shock absorbers that improve the performance of the machine. According to reports, the crew ARV T-16 consists of three people: the driver, commander and operator of special systems. They are located in front of the case and must fall into place through hatches in the roof. Near the hatches provides inspection devices for use in a combat situation. The composition of the equipment of workplaces of the crew is unknown. It can be assumed that the position of the driver management is unified with devices other technology family. In this case, the machine is controlled by a hand wheel, lever gearbox and two pedals. There is also reason to believe that the management of certain special systems can be performed using the built-in and remote consoles.
The main objective of Armored Recovery Vehicle is out on the field of battle and recovery of damaged armor that makes special demands to the level of protection. In order to ensure the highest possible vitality of the new machine T-16 received a set of powerful reservation and additional systems of dynamic protection to special electronics.
In the program "Military Acceptance" referrence to the BRAM T-16 is equipped with a special electronic system that allows to repel attacks with the use of guided weapons. In addition, this system is able to neutralize the anti-tank mines with electromagnetic fuses. Probably, it is a system of electronic warfare, unified with the tank equipment T-14 and T-15 infantry fighting vehicles.
Protection of the crew and internal aggregates in contact with the enemy projectile or missile provides its own armored car and a set of additional equipment. Thus, the frontal part of the body is covered with blocks of dynamic protection and latticed screens. Due to some special features of the layout of dynamic protection equipment is equipped with only cabin crew. The right side of the forehead, in turn, is covered with bars. The left side of the habitable compartment completely covered by ERA. On the right-board screen located several such blocks over which set the screen grid.
The middle and aft sides are equipped with a set of protive lattices. This equipment allows protection of the machine from anti-tank weapons, but it does not interfere with the cooling of the engine compartment. Aft view protected only their own body armor and reinforced items of special equipment.
If necessary ARV T-16 can respond to the enemy machine-gun fire. To this end, the crew cabin roof mounted remote controlled unit with heavy machine gun. With this weapon the machine crew can defend against enemy infantry or light equipment.
To perform basic tasks, such as the evacuation of damaged armor from the battlefield and perform some maintenance work, Bram T-16 received a set of special equipment. At the lower front hull mounted dozer blade with hydraulic drive. It can be used to perform some of excavation, and also serves at the outrigger to the main crane. Furthermore, blade provides additional protection for frontal projection.
The most visible element of the special equipment is the main crane. In front of the case, the right of the cabin crew, the crane is a small platform on which the hinged arm. During the filming of the TV program ARV lift loads weighing about 2 tons. The main crane is designed for various lifting and moving heavy loads, for example for replacement of the power block equipment or repair of combat units. It is not advisable to use the main crane in all situations, since its characteristics may be redundant. To solve these problems Machine T-16 carries an additional arm mounted in the rear of the hull on the port side. This device with a lower carrying capacity may be used for repair work, or to move a relatively light loads.
The well-known specialist in the field of armored vehicles, Alex Khlopotov, told on his blog a curious story connected with an additional crane. This device is missing in the original terms of reference of the military department, but the authors of the project decided to add it on their own initiative. The military did not approve of such an initiative and demanded to remove the second crane. Engineers, in turn, ignored this requirement and the resulting current machine has two cranes with different characteristics.
The most important innovation of the project relating to the effectiveness in the real world, is a special towing device. Ural Transport Machine-Building Design Bureau has developed and patented a motorized towing device for towing the damaged tanks. Such coupling performs all the necessary operations using their own drives on command from the remote control and do not need immediate help of man. This ARV crew in preparation for the tow must not leave the hulls and risk their lives. This towing device is used for the first time in domestic practice.
The crew recovery vehicle can perform some repairs. For this purpose, the T-16 has a T-welding equipment, tools, etc. equipment. Thus, the new ARV can not only remove the damaged equipment from the battlefield, but, for small lesions, repair it on their own and without the participation of high-grade military workshops.
Prospetive ARV T-16 in the near future is the tests of the complex and then to go to a batch production. For efficient operation of all the equipment on the basis of a unified platform, "Armata" troops required auxiliary machines, including repair and recovery.
In accordance with existing plans until 2020 the army should get 2,300 armored vehicles based on the "Armata" platform. The exact number of tanks, BMP or ARV included in this number has not been announced.
