Russian Shipyard Submarine Fires

According to open sources, there had been 15 fires on nuclear submarines burning at shipyards since 1993, including the incident on April 29, 2016.

  1. On January 30, 1993, a fire broke out on the nuclear submarine of the Northern Fleet, which was at the 10th shipyard in the town of Polyarny (Murmansk region). There were no casualties.

  2. On October 23, 2002, at the shipyard N35 (Murmansk, Rosta microdistrict), when cutting the nuclear submarine B-22 (project 675MKV) into metal, a fire broke out in the dry dock due to careless welding. There were no casualties.

  3. On March 5, 2003, the nuclear submarine B-336 "Pskov" (project 945A "Condor") caught fire at the shipyard N82 (Roslyakovo, Murmansk region) during repairs in the PD-50 floating dock. According to the official version, at first the workers' hut broke out because of the sparks, from where the flame spread to the rubber coating of the submarine. There were no casualties, the anti-hydrolocation coating was damaged.

  4. On August 1, 2005, at the Zvezdochka plant (Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk Region), during the dismantling of the B-298 nuclear submarine (Project 671RTM "Pike"), a fire occurred in the third compartment, followed by a volumetric explosion of diesel fuel vapor. One of the workers in the boat died immediately, the second died a few hours later in intensive care.

  5. On April 12, 2006, in a floating repair dock at the Russian Navy base in Vilyuchinsk (Kamchatka Territory), rags in one of the compartments caught fire during welding work on a nuclear submarine of the Pacific Fleet. There were no dead or injured.

  6. On November 2, 2006 at the Northern Machine-Building Enterprise (Severodvinsk), during welding, rags caught fire, and then the wooden flooring and cable routes in the third compartment of the repaired nuclear submarine K-317 "Panther" (project 971 "Shchuka-B"). The burning compartment was battened down to cut off the access of air, however, during the exploration of the fire, seven people were poisoned by the products of combustion and freon from the fire extinguishing system.

  7. On April 25, 2007, a fire broke out at Zvezdochka in an empty missile silo of the decommissioned nuclear submarine TK-12 Simbirsk (Project 941 Akula). The fire was extinguished by two fire brigades.

  8. On March 25, 2009, during the dismantling of the BS-411 Orenburg submarine (project 09774, originally 667A) at the Zvezdochka plant, according to the official version, the rubber coating caught fire due to gas welding. There were no casualties in the incident.

  9. On October 6, 2009, during the dismantling of the hydroacoustic complex of the disposed nuclear submarine KS-403 Kazan (project 09780, originally 667A), a fire occurred in the bow at Zvezdochka. The fire was extinguished for six hours. Nobody died.

  10. On February 19, 2010 at the Zvezdochka plant, the nuclear submarine K-480 "Ak Bars" (project 971 "Shchuka-B"), which was being scrapped, caught fire. During the gas-cutting work in the hold of the third compartment, a fire broke out, which was extinguished for 15 hours. To extinguish the fire, it was necessary to open a solid hull from the outside.

  11. On December 29, 2011, the nuclear submarine K-84 "Yekaterinburg" (project 667BDRM "Dolphin"), which was being repaired at the dock of the 82nd shipyard (settlement Roslyakovo, Murmansk region), suffered a major fire. After the construction debris ignited, the fire spread to the wooden scaffolding, and from them to the rubber coating of the submarine. The extinguishing took more than 17 hours; to completely extinguish the fire, the floating dock had to be submerged. According to some media reports, during the fire, there was ammunition on the ship - missiles with nuclear warheads and torpedoes. As a result of the incident, 11 people were injured, there were no casualties. On December 19, 2014, the repaired Yekaterinburg was handed over to the fleet. At the time of the fire, nuclear weapons were on board the Yekaterinburg nuclear submarine.

  12. On September 16, 2013, at the Zvezda shipyard in Bolshoy Kamen (Primorsky Territory), during the installation of the main ballast tank, a fire occurred on the Pacific Fleet nuclear submarine K-150 "Tomsk" (project 949A "Antey"). As a result, 15 servicemen were injured, there were no deaths.

  13. On March 17, 2014, at the Nerpa shipyard in Snezhnogorsk, Murmansk Region, during the dismantling of the K-148 Krasnodar nuclear submarine (Project 949A Antey, decommissioned on July 28, 1998), a fire broke out due to a careless carrying out welding works. The fire was extinguished four hours later. No harm done.

  14. On April 7, 2015, at the Zvezdochka shipyard (Severodvinsk), during welding, a fire broke out on the K-226 Orel nuclear submarine (project 949A Antey), which since November 2013 has been undergoing deep repairs at the enterprise. modernization. The fire occurred in the inter-board space in the area of ??the ninth compartment, the area of ??the fire reached 40 square meters. m, flooding of the dock was undertaken for extinguishing. There were no nuclear fuel, weapons, chemically active, hazardous substances and fissile materials on the ship. No harm done.

  15. On April 29, 2016, on the territory of the North-Eastern Repair Center (Vilyuchinsk, Kamchatka Territory), there was smoke in the bow of the nuclear submarine K-173 "Krasnoyarsk" of project 949A "Antey" being scrapped. The ship was withdrawn from the Navy in 1998, at the time of the incident the nuclear power plant and weapons were removed from the submarine. No casualties were reported.
