PD-14 powerplant

PD-14 powerplant The PD-14 will become a unified engine for a wide class of transport and civil aircraft of the Russian Federation, including the Russian-Chinese project of the long-haul airliner CR929. The use of PD-14 will save Russia from the need to acquire foreign power plants.

It is known that the family of PD-14 engines in the class of 9-18 tons should be the main project for Perm Engine Company and Aviadvigatel Design Bureau after 2015, that is, after the closure of the Tu-204 and Tu-204CM programs. UEC is implementing a project to create a promising family of engines of various dimensions. The main feature is to create a unified gas generator that will allow assembling and producing engines of various types. Three technical engines are included in the specification, for a light, medium and heavy aircraft. , besides the engine for MS-21.

The engine PD-14 is designed for medium-range aircraft, regional aircraft and helicopters. The engine will be used on the new generation MS-21 passenger aircraft. A feature of this family of engines is that part of the parts, including the hard ones, are made of composite materials and will be made on 3D printers, while the degree of unification of parts between modifications is 80%.

The development of the engine was carried out in the framework of the state program of the Russian Federation “Development of the aviation industry for 2013-2025”. The project was initiated by JSC "UEC" in order to provide alternative supplies of aircraft engines for promising Russian medium-haul aircraft and supported by PJSC "UAC". The PD-14 engine is designed for the promising family of short-medium-haul MS-21 aircraft (150-220 passenger seats). In comparison with the best analogues at the moment, in operation the declared parameters of the engine will ensure a reduction in the specific fuel consumption in the cruise mode by 15%.

The task posed by the country's president to carry out import substitution in the field of high technologies in the shortest possible time was not so simple. Especially in the domestic aviation industry, primarily in the production of power plants. But without engines of the new generation, Russian planes will be uncompetitive even on the domestic market. Planned for a medium-haul passenger MS-21, the prospective aircraft engine PD-14 with a 14-tonne thrust can also be installed on BTAs of the Il-76 type. Moreover, initially it was planned even for a promising airline of military transport aviation (PAK TA).

The PD-14 engine, which had not yet appeared as of 2018, was already partly morally obsolete, and with its stated 14 tons it cannot provide sufficient thrust for a new PA-TA military transport. Despite the fact that the production of the motor used the most modern technologies and materials. The development trends of the aircraft engine industry, were in the opinion of CIAM, such that by 2020–2025 the engines of this class should have a bypass ratio of 14–17. And by specific fuel consumption - to be at the level of 0.51 kilograms per kilogram of thrust per hour (kg / kgf / h). The world is going to increase bypass. In the PD-14, this parameter is only 8.5, and the specific fuel consumption is 0.526 kg / kgf / h.

It is clear that enormous funds had been spent on the development: the entire budget of the program and the launch of the PD-14 series amounted to about 80 billion rubles. This once again speaks eloquently about how important goal-setting and strategic planning are at the initial stage, the ability to foresee the development of weapons and military equipment and the "surprises" of competitors.

With respect to the MS-21, it was developed with two types of powerplant - with the PW1400G engines of the American Pratt & Whitney and PD-14. Irkut, the aircraft developer, entered into contracts with Pratt & Whitney a few years ago to supply 350 engines. And from the Russian JDC - only 70. Paradoxical situation. In the PD-14 invested huge budget funds, but it had not yet gone into series production.

A very subtle question is pricing. The cost of one PD-14 is about six million dollars, and the PW1400G is 5.4 million. Would lessors agree to overpay $ 1.2 million for a plane with a domestic engine that has the worst performance? It was not long to wait for an answer to the question: the PD-14 should have been launched in 2018. Meanwhile, the MS-21 had long passed flight tests with the PW1400G and contracts with foreign buyers are mainly signed in the configuration of these motors.

It was planned to equip the PD-14 and the army Il-214, Il-76. But what the opinion of the military itself will ultimately turn out to be remained to be seen. Most likely the issue will be the subject of separate negotiations between the manufacturer and the Ministry of Defense.

The new Russian high-tech and competitive aircraft engine PD-14 has received a type certificate. The document was signed 18 October 2018 by the head of the Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviation), Alexander Neradko. In fact, the receipt of the Type Certificate confirms the readiness of the PD-14 for implementation and operation. It can be stated: the first in Russia modern turbojet engine for civil aviation has been successfully created, stressed the Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Denis Manturov. As the Minister noted, the next stage of the project will be the validation of the Type Certificate PD-14 at EASA, which is scheduled for 2019.

Simultaneously, tests of the MS-21 aircraft with remote control with a PD-14 engine will be carried out. The timing of the creation of the engine was originally synchronized with the timing of the creation of the aircraft in PJSC "Corporation" Irkut" explained the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia. It was expected that by the end of 2018 3 serial engines PD-14 will be manufactured and delivered by PJSC "Irkut Corporation".
